How would buying digital artwork affect the environment?
Ethereum is a very popular blockchain in the world of CryptoArt, and more, generally speaking, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT.) Ethereum is estimated to have an annual 35kWH producing 13 million tons of C02 a year. While a study by the University of Cambridge found that additional blockchain activity doesn’t increase emissions, we shouldn’t ignore the additionality of carbon-based on NFT and blockchain activity.
The NFT market is estimated to be $250m, with hardly any consideration on reducing or offsetting emissions. Many artists seem to be interested in offsetting or negating their emissions, but there’s no easy way to do this.
